Hi All,
Next Saturday Feb. 4 is the big day, and this is going to
be a great tournament!
John Ellis will be at the tournament in the early
afternoon to provide tips and for short play-the-pro
sessions! Find out more about John Ellis at:
http://www.ellistyle.com.
The tournament time and number of courts is limited, so we
need people to arrive on time - approx. 8:30 am - to keep
the tournament on schedule.
I will send out a final tourney draw mid next week. We
can accommodate small changes/additions to your roster,
but please make them by Wednesday. Also, please provide
the names of any guests (non-team members) who will be
attending.
You can contact me at anytime at: (831) 335 3308.
TOURNAMENT START TIME
The tournament will start promptly at 9 am, Saturday Feb.
4. We have limited time and courts, however we can fit
this tournament nicely into one day if we start promptly
at 9 am. Let me know if you need to arrange for a late
arrival. Please arrive at approximately 8:30 am, and if
you arrive on time you will have a little extra time to
warm up on the courts.
TOURNAMENT ROSTERS
I have all of the tournament rosters ... thank you!
Each school can bring guests & spectators. However, we
need to know the names of these people in advance. Please
send the names of any non-team members who will be
attending.
TOURNAMENT COSTS & FOOD
The tournament costs $10 this time, and must be paid when
you arrive. This cost covers snacks, drinks,
racquetballs, and misc. equipment. Please bring cash.
This tournament is a little more "a la carte" ... There
is a nice Cafe just downstairs from the courts where you
can buy lunch (sandwiches, pizza, etc.), and additional
snacks. There is also nearby off campus fast food places.
And, there will be gloves and eye guards for sale. We
are lowering the entry fee of this tournament, and the
next one, so that ...
USRA Membership and Sanctioning
We are working to have our next tournament (not this UCD
tourney) be a USRA sanctioned tournament! This is very
valuable for the participants and for the growth of the
WCRC ... It will mean that we are nationally recognized as
an official collegiate racquetball division! In order to
be a sanctioned tournament, each participant will need to
join the USRA. There is an annual $30 fee to be a member,
and the membership benefits include:
- One-year subscription to RACQUETBALL Magazine
- Secondary medical insurance
- Tournament Eligibility - Essentially all tournaments,
other than our earlier two tournaments, require a USRA
membership. There are a lot of exciting public
tournaments out there, and you will need to be a USRA
member to play in them.
- Access to Elite Training opportunities
- National ranking services
- And much, much more ... see http://www.usra.org and
click "Member Services".
Additionally, all of our tournaments next year will be
USRA sanctioned tournaments, and will require USRA
membership.
Please discuss this with your team, and provide any
feedback on this important step in growth of the WCRC.

Due to time and space limitations, the following rules
will be in affect:
- Matches are 2 out of 3 games.
- The first 2 games are to 11 points, and
- The 3rd game, if necessary, is to 7 points.
- All games are decided by 1 point - first player to 11,
or 7, points wins.

the ball and serving.
- 5 minutes of warm up time before a match.
- Matches are self-refereed.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The tournament will use the "Olympic" format - same as
last tourney - which is also used for Collegiate
Nationals; you are guaranteed at least three matches. We
will have 3 men's divisions, and a women's round robin
division.
Within each men's division, there will be four
sub-divisions. Players who loose a match will drop down
into the lower sub-divisions to continue playing. The
specific structure is:
Division #
Gold
Blue
Red
White
All players start in the Gold sub-division. A loss in
first round (of Gold) will put you in the Red division. A
loss in second round of Gold puts you in the Blue
division. A loss in first round of Red puts you in the
White division. Winning players continue to play within
their sub-division. Consequently, each player will play
at least 3 matches. This same structure is used for
Division 2 and Division 3.
Points are awarded based on your final standing at the end
of the tournament. A complete breakdown of the points
will be provided later, when finalized, however for
Division 1 the points may be like the following.
Division 1 First Second Third Fourth Other
Gold 280 210 175 140 70
Blue 142 124 115 106 88
Red 68 51 43 34 17
White 24 18 15 12 6
Note:
- Points are awarded based on your final standing at the
end of the tournament and are NOT accumulated over the
course of the tournament.
- You must win at least one match, by the end of the
tournament, to be awarded any points.
For the women's round robin, points are awarded based on
your final standing at the end of the tournament:
Point Schedule
1st 280
2nd 218
3rd 170
4th 132
5th 103
6th 80
...
Points will be totaled for a team, and the team with the
most points wins.
I will send out a final tourney draw mid next week. We
can accommodate small changes/additions to your roster,
but please make them by Wednesday. Also, please provide
the names of any guests (non-team members) who will be
attending.
See you soon at UCD!
