We had a great season with growing attendance and new
schools. San Joaquin Delta College - near the heart of California
racquetball - brought the incredibly strong players Ismael
Aldana, David Horn, and the Sue Sublaban. Ismael won the
UC Davis tourney, David won the San Jose State tourney,
and Sue competed very well in Men's II with her matches
always drawing a big crowd. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo fielded
a team for the Berkeley tourney, and we look forward to
more involvement from CalPoly. Northern California has also
seen the new players John Holst (Las Positas) and Anderson
Ha (CSU East Bay).
The WCRC is continuing to grow in Southern California.
Jon Varona (CSU Fullerton) together with Jeffrey Weiss -
who started a new club this year at Pitzer College - ran
our second WCRC Southern
California tournament! Over the past year in our two
WCRC Southern California tourneys, we have had participants
from the following schools:
- Claremont University Consortium
- CSU Fullerton
- CSU Long Beach
- Goldenwest
- Riverside CC
- San Bernardino
- San Diego Mesa
- San Diego State University
- UC Irvine
- UCLA
- USC
The excitement and dedication in our collegiate racquetball
players is evident in their travel half way across the state
to compete. Alfredo Lopez, Mac Williamson, Arvind Wander
and myself (John Bardos) traveled to Southern California
to play in and run the
first WCRC Southern California tourney at Fullerton,
with significant help from Jon Varona.
Traveling to Northern California were Dylan Carr - who
came all the way from San Diego and also competed in last
year's USRA Collegiate Nationals, Abhi Tiyagi & Jessica
Torres (UCI), Jon Varona & Andre Mora (CSUF), Kyle Merritt
& Chris Wilcox & Ben Lobue (CalPoly), and Eli Smukler
(UCLA).
